DAVID BOYD

David Boyd was a significant Australian figurative artist and a member of the celebrated Boyd artistic family. A painter, potter, ceramic sculptor and printmaker, his work combined imaginative, often dreamlike imagery with a strong interest in Australian history, morality and the human condition.
Born in Murrumbeena, Victoria, Boyd initially studied music before serving in the Australian Army during the Second World War. He later studied at the National Gallery School and first established his reputation as a potter, working with his brother Guy and later with his wife, Hermia. Together David and Hermia Boyd became highly regarded for their innovative ceramics.
Boyd began painting seriously in 1957, creating symbolic works inspired by Australian explorers and later addressing subjects including Indigenous history, justice and social conscience. A member of the influential Antipodeans group, he spent many years living and working in Europe before returning permanently to Australia in 1975. His distinctive paintings are represented in major Australian public, university and private collections.
